An introduction to the passes of the Lake District
A nice challenging ride which incorporates two of the passes from the Fred Whitton Challenge, which if you are reasonably fit should take you about 4/5 hours. Before attempting this I doubted my ability to climb a 25% gradient but I found if approached steadily, having short rest stops as necessary, it can be done.
Once you have tackled this, you wil appreciate the effort Alan, Andy and Kev put in when they completed the full event which includes 12 major climbs, some of which are even more difficult than Honister.
We set out from the Calvert Trust but there are several car parks in Keswick where you could start from. There is a cafe at the top of Honister where you can get a much needed cup of tea or coffee before the fast descent into Buttermere or Borrowdale, depending on the direction you have approached the climb.
