A moderately dificult ride round Skiddaw

We set off from the Calvert Trust but there is a car park a few hundred metres further along the the A591 which has a few disabled parking spaces and a tea shop.

The majority of the route is one quiet lanes with little traffic but as some are quite narrow you have to be aware of farm traffic etc as the roads are barely wide enough for them, so it is probably best if you pull over to let them pass.

The pub in Heskett Newmarket has been recommended as a stop for lunch but as we were trying to beat the weather we didn't stop.

Part of this route, between Mungrisale and the A66, is on a gated road which you may wish to avoid. Another section is on the Old Railway Trail which also has gates and a poor surface. If you look at a local map there appears to be alternatives to both which you could investigate. Likewise you can opt to avoid much of the A591 on the return journey by going though Ormathwaite.
